Exploring Barcelona & Traveling Around Europe: Tips for Study Abroad Students
By: Kirsten Lasiewicz
Studying abroad in Barcelona has been one of the most exciting experiences of my life. Coming into this program alone was scary, but now, one month into the semester, I have gained so many new friends and unforgettable experiences. Barcelona is full of vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and incredible tapas. It took some time to adjust to living here while balancing academics, personal time, and weekend adventures, but finding a supportive group of friends has made all the difference.
My number one tip? Say yes to every opportunity. The best part of life in Barcelona is that no two days are ever the same and there is always more to explore.
Here are a few tips I have learned so far:
Explore Barcelona
Barcelona has something for everyone鈥攂eaches, mountains, and a vibrant city life. The sun is shining every day, and the winter is mild. You can get almost anywhere in 30 minutes using the metro, tram, buses, or trains. Google Maps has become my best friend鈥攗se the public transportation feature to navigate easily. One of my favorite experiences so far has been watching the sunset with my friends at Bunkers del Carmel, where you will find the most breathtaking view of Barcelona. My two favorite tapas restaurants so far are La Pepita and Casa Lolea!
Pack Smart for Weekend Trips
Traveling light is essential to saving money and staying organized. I use a small weekend bag, while many of my friends prefer travel backpacks. Wear your bulkiest clothes and pack versatile basics you can mix and match while leaving room for souvenirs. Always bring a portable charger--you will be on the go constantly. Also, keep in mind that some budget airlines charge up to $75 at the gate if your bag is too big, so pack wisely
Balance Travel and Rest
This one is still a work in progress for me, and while traveling every weekend is exciting it can be exhausting and expensive. Barcelona itself has so much to offer, along with plenty affordable day trips to places like Sitges, Girona, and Montserrat. 精东传媒 also organizes free day trips, which are great opportunities to explore new places, meet new people, and save money. Prioritize rest and downtime to ensure you stay healthy and do not get burnt out!
Plan, but Stay Flexible
Planning ahead is helpful, but the best experiences often come from spontaneous adventures. Some of my favorite memories have been from last minute decisions and unplanned adventures. When visiting a new city, always leave time for wandering and discovering hidden gems.
